Boriqua Soy! (I am Boriqua!)
I am the child of Puerto Rican parents that came over to the United States when they were young. Before Puerto Ricans became citizens of the United States, they were considered immigrants. As the first generation born on American soil, I grew up with a duality of cultures. One of spiritual ancestry worship and the other based on the Christian faith forced upon the Taino Indians by the Spaniards and currently practiced as part of the Puerto Rican – American identity. This body of work is my journey in discovering and accepting this amalgamation of spirituality that I have come to accept and practice in my life. I am comfortable worshiping in a sanctuary and nature; to me, they are of the same. My ancestors guide me, and so do the angels from heaven. Soy Boriqua! is a statement of affirmation that keeps me rooted and connected to my Puerto Rican heritage.
My name is Lisette (Lee-Set). I currently live in Florida. I started as a photographer presenting and speaking about my images to community members at the North Miami Museum of Contemporary Art. That small opportunity gave me the confidence to pursue my passion and to develop my signature style. During that pursuit, I earned a BA in Art. Art may not have been what most photographers would aim to acquire, but it gave me the insight and skills to see the light, color, perspective, and design in a new way. Now, I am working on my MA in Photography, which has allowed me to hone in my photographic intention and focus on a lyrical documentary thesis.
I am the Sole Proprietor & Gallerist of Galleria D’arte, which I opened in October 2021. It is an art and photography gallery for local contemporary art that provides artists/photographers the opportunity to exhibit their art/photography in a dedicated space to the local community and expose their art to a larger audience via the website, social media, and other advertising media.
Talking about art with others in the community and beyond is what I enjoy. When it comes to speaking about photography, this is where I shine. Photography is misunderstood, and helping the viewing audience understand, learn and gain a different perspective makes it all worthwhile.
